The combined Tarsar Marsar and Kashmir Great Lakes Treks offer an unparalleled 113-kilometer adventure through the heart of Kashmir, unfolding over 14 nights and 15 days. These two iconic trekking routes together provide a rare and immersive experience, showcasing the pristine beauty, serene landscapes, and rich cultural heritage of one of the most enchanting regions in the Himalayas. This extraordinary journey not only takes trekkers through diverse and awe-inspiring terrain, but also offers a deep connection with the natural and cultural elements that define Kashmir.

The trek begins with the Tarsar Marsar Trek, a trail celebrated for its stunning alpine lakes, lush meadows, and tranquil forests. Starting from the picturesque Aru Valley, a hidden gem nestled at the foot of the towering Kolahoi Glacier, trekkers are gradually introduced to the pristine wilderness of the region. As the trail winds through thick pine forests and vast grasslands, trekkers are greeted by breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks that rise majestically above the landscape. The highlight of this trek lies in the awe-inspiring Tarsar and Marsar Lakes, two of the most serene and beautiful high-altitude lakes in Kashmir. The crystal-clear waters of Tarsar Lake, reflecting the surrounding snow-covered mountains, offer a perfect campsite for trekkers, where they can immerse themselves in the stillness of the alpine surroundings. After exploring Tarsar Lake, the trail continues towards Marsar Lake, a more remote and equally captivating lake, where trekkers are treated to panoramic vistas that stretch across the Kashmir Valley.

Throughout the Tarsar Marsar Trek, the pastoral presence of the semi-nomadic Gujars and Bakerwals adds a cultural dimension to the journey. These communities, who migrate with their herds through the high mountain meadows, offer trekkers a glimpse into a way of life that has remained unchanged for centuries. Their herding practices, wool weaving, and traditional customs bring a human touch to the otherwise pristine landscape, enriching the trekking experience with cultural depth. The trail is also adorned with vibrant wildflowers, and the constant presence of the Lidder River or its tributaries adds a soothing soundtrack to the adventure.

After completing the Tarsar Marsar section, trekkers then embark on the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek, a 65-kilometer journey that delves deeper into the rugged and remote beauty of Kashmir’s alpine regions. This trek is renowned for its surreal beauty, as it leads trekkers to some of the most iconic alpine lakes in the region, such as Vishansar, Krishansar, Gadsar, and Gangbal. Each lake offers a unique and enchanting view, nestled beneath towering peaks, with waters that shimmer like jewels in the sunlight. The trail ascends through high mountain passes such as the Gadsar Pass, which offers a challenging yet rewarding experience for trekkers, while providing panoramic views of the majestic peaks that define the region.

As trekkers make their way across this stunning route, they are surrounded by a diverse range of landscapes, from lush green meadows to rocky terrain and snow-covered paths. The Great Lakes Trek is not just a feast for the eyes; it is a journey into the heart of the Himalayas, where nature’s artistry is on full display. The flora, including Himalayan Blue Poppies and Buttercups, blankets the meadows in vivid colors, while the fauna—ranging from the elusive Himalayan Monal to the rare Kashmir Musk Deer—adds an element of mystique to the trek.

The cultural richness of Kashmir continues to reveal itself along this section of the journey, as trekkers pass through small villages and encounter local herders, continuing the trek’s theme of cultural immersion. The trek culminates at Gangbal and Nundkol Lakes, situated at the base of Mount Harmukh, offering some of the most serene and picturesque views of the entire journey.

When combined, these two treks provide an extraordinary and comprehensive exploration of Kashmir’s diverse landscapes, from lush valleys and alpine lakes to high-altitude meadows and rugged peaks. The Tarsar Marsar and Kashmir Great Lakes Treks together offer the perfect blend of challenging adventure, tranquil beauty, and cultural immersion, making them an unforgettable experience for seasoned trekkers. With its mix of stunning vistas, rich flora and fauna, and cultural insights, this trek is a rare opportunity to experience Kashmir in all its unspoiled grandeur—a true pilgrimage into the heart of the Himalayas.

One of the most captivating stops today is Gadsar Lake, often considered one of the most charming lakes on this trek. Surrounded by towering mountains that are home to glaciers, the lake’s deep blue color is both eye-catching and surreal. Its still, reflective waters create a meditative atmosphere, offering a sense of peace and tranquility. The sight of Gadsar Lake, with its mesmerizing beauty, has a therapeutic and calming effect, making it an unforgettable part of the journey.

After a brief rest by the lake, we will continue our descent to Gadsarsar Campsite, where we will camp for the night. The campsite is located in a beautiful spot, offering scenic views and a peaceful environment to unwind and reflect on the day’s experiences.

Once at the campsite, we will enjoy evening tea with snacks, followed by a warming soup. Dinner will be served, along with a sweet dish to cap off the day’s adventure.

  • Altitude: 3810m to 3600m
  • Time Taken: 5 Hours
  • Distance Covered: 12 Km
  • Campsite: Satsar

As usual, we begin our day with a wake-up call at 6 am, followed by breakfast at 7 am, and departure from the campsite by 8 am. After breakfast, a short briefing will be provided by your trek leader before we start our journey for the day.

Today will be a relatively easier day compared to the previous ones, as we trek from Gadsar to Mengandob,Satsar, via Dhoobta Pani, and Satsar Lakes. The total distance covered will be 12 km, taking approximately 5 hours. The terrain is mostly gentle, with only one incline patch as we leave Gadsar.

On the way, we will pass Dhoobta Pani, a fascinating "losing river" where the water disappears into the ground, only to resurface somewhere else in the valley, its exact location a mystery. Following this, we will reach the Satsar Lakes, a breathtaking chain of seven alpine lakes. These lakes drain into the Wangath River through the Chur Nala. The landscape here is mostly rugged and desolate, with towering mountains around us. The meadows along the way are rich in colorful buttercups and other wildflowers, adding a vivid contrast to the surroundings.

After trekking through the picturesque valley, we will arrive at the Satsar Campsite, a serene and beautiful location. There will be no packed lunch today, but we will enjoy a hot lunch at the campsite, which will be a welcome break. Later, we’ll have evening tea with snacks, followed by a warm and comforting soup. Dinner will be served, along with a sweet dish to end the day on a delightful note.

  • Altitude: 3600m TO 3550m Via Zachhibal Pass 4100m
  • Time Taken: 5 Hours
  • Distance Covered: 9 Km
  • Campsite: Nundkol

Our day begins as usual, with a wake-up call at 6 am, breakfast at 7 am, and departure by 8 am. After a brief briefing from your trek leader, we set off on what promises to be a moderately challenging yet rewarding trek.

Today, we will cover 9 km, crossing the Zacchibal Pass (4100m), which marks the transition from the rugged terrain of the previous valley to the serene beauty of Gangbal Valley. This day is considered moderate to difficult, beginning with a section of boulders and rocky terrain. The boulder field will dominate much of the day, requiring us to carefully hop from one rock to the next as we continue our ascent. The trail gradually climbs toward Zacchibal Pass, with a sharp 3-hour ascent leading us to the top. Once we reach the pass, we will enjoy a well-deserved break before beginning an equally long descent.

The trail thereafter takes us deeper into Gangbal Valley, where the landscape becomes increasingly captivating. As we descend, we are treated to breathtaking views of Nundkol Lake and Gangbal Lake, both nestled beneath the towering Mount Harmukh (5200m). Harmukh, often referred to as the "Face of Shiva" for its resemblance to the Hindu god Shiva’s visage, is also known as the "Eiger of Kashmir" due to its striking similarity to the iconic Eiger mountain in the Swiss Alps. The grandeur of this mountain and the pristine beauty of the lakes are unparalleled.

Both Gangbal and Nundkol Lakes are abundant in trout fish, making these waters not only visually stunning but ecologically rich as well. Gangbal Lake, the largest alpine lake in the Kashmir Valley, is a particularly serene spot, surrounded by towering peaks and lush meadows.

After a full day of trekking through such an awe-inspiring landscape, we will reach the Nundkol Campsite, located at the foot of the imposing Mount Harmukh. The sheer size and beauty of Harmukh draw all eyes toward it, making this campsite a truly remarkable place to rest for the night. The sunrise here is nothing short of magical, casting a golden hue over the valley and the lake, creating a tranquil and meditative atmosphere.

Along the way, we will enjoy a packed lunch, and once we reach camp, we’ll be treated to evening tea with snacks. A warm and comforting soup will follow, along with a hearty dinner and a sweet dish to round off the day.

This day will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of the trek, offering stunning views, an exhilarating challenge, and the chance to rest in the shadow of one of the most iconic mountains in the region.

Buffer day or Rest day, thoughtfully built into the itinerary to allow for recovery or to account for any unforeseen delays, such as inclement weather. If we encounter a rainy day or any other reason requiring us to adjust the schedule, this day serves as a backup to ensure we stay on track.

The day is to rest and recuperate, allowing everyone to recharge before continuing with the trek. One may choose to bask in the sun, read a book, swim in the nearby waters, meditate, or simply reflect on the journey thus far. It's also a perfect opportunity to soak in the beauty of your surroundings and explore the region around the campsite at a leisurely pace.

Breakfast will be served at a leisurely time, allowing you to fully rest and enjoy the morning. Later in the day, we will have a hot lunch, followed by evening tea with snacks, soup, dinner, and a sweet dish.

This day offers a much-needed respite in the midst of the trek, allowing everyone to relax and fully enjoy the serene beauty of the landscape, both physically and mentally.

  • Altitude: 3550m to 2271m
  • Time Taken: 6 Hours
  • Distance Covered: 13 Km. Drive to Srinagar , 55 Km ( 2hours Drive )

We begin the last day of our trek with an early breakfast at 7:00 am, and by 8:00 am, we will set off. A packed lunch will be provided for the day. Today, we will trek from Nundkol Lake to Naranag, covering a distance of 13 km in approximately 6 hours. The trail is a steady descent all the way to Naranag, which can be hard on your legs, so it’s important to exercise caution and maintain a steady pace.

The trek from Nundkol to Naranag is a magnificent journey. As we descend, we will pass through the expansive meadows of Trunkol, offering panoramic views of Mount Harmukh and the picturesque Salnai Valley. The terrain is varied, and the winding, zig-zag descent through Butsheri Forest adds a thrilling aspect to the day.

The highlight of the trek is Naranag, a beautiful hamlet where the Naranag Temple, an ancient 7th-century AD site, stands. This historic temple, now in ruins, is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is located on the banks of the Wanghat River in Wangat Valley. The serene surroundings make it a fitting conclusion to the trek.

This marks the last day of our trek and the culmination of the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek. After exploring the temple, we will take transportation back to Srinagar, which is 55 km away, and the journey will take approximately 2 hours.

It is a great place to shop not too far from New York. We took the bus from Port Authority and traveled through the countryside to get there.
