LIDDERWATH TREK

Among the myriad trekking routes that grace the picturesque landscapes of Kashmir, the Tarsar Marsar Trek stands as a true gem. This trail is distinguished by its breathtaking ensemble of three pristine alpine lakes, vast verdant meadows, towering peaks, and the tranquil flow of the Lidder River. It offers trekkers the unique opportunity to camp by the serene waters of Tarsar Lake, while also providing a panoramic vista from the Marsar Lake Ridge. A trek well-suited to novices, the journey unfolds over a span of eight days, including a crucial acclimatization day at Aru Valley. The ideal window for this trek extends from June to October.

The journey begins in the picturesque Aru Valley, a serene haven nestled 112 kilometers from Srinagar. This quaint valley, surrounded by verdant meadows and dramatic mountain landscapes, is not only a natural wonder but also a cultural gateway to the trek. Aru’s tranquil beauty is enhanced by its proximity to the Kolahoi Glacier, one of the most revered glaciers in the region. The valley is a paradise for nature lovers, with rolling meadows, clear streams, and the verdant greenery of alpine forests. It’s here that trekkers take their first steps into the wilderness, surrounded by the majestic views of towering peaks and the peaceful atmosphere of this remote corner of Kashmir.

As the trek progresses, adventurers are introduced to the pastoral charm of the region. Along the route, one encounters large herds of sheep and goats grazing in the meadows, tended by the pastoral communities of the Gujars and Bakerwals. These semi-nomadic tribes have called the alpine pastures of Kashmir home for centuries, migrating with their herds between the lower valleys and the higher mountain meadows in a tradition that sustains both their way of life and the natural balance of the region. Their presence along the trail adds a cultural depth to the trek, as trekkers witness the age-old practices of herding, wool weaving, and tending to livestock. The Gujars and Bakerwals are known for their resilience, living in harmony with the harsh yet beautiful terrain, and their presence provides a fascinating glimpse into the region’s vibrant rural life.

The trek’s crowning jewels are the renowned Tarsar and Marsar Lakes, two of Kashmir’s largest alpine lakes, whose mesmerizing beauty captivates all who behold them. The Tarsar Lake campsite is positioned directly on the lake’s shore, affording unparalleled views of the lake’s shimmering surface, perfect for evening explorations. From Tarsar Lake, trekkers are treated to awe-inspiring views of Mount Kolahoi, the highest peak in the Kashmir Valley, towering majestically in the distance, its snow-covered slopes creating a striking contrast against the green meadows below.

Along the entire route, the trail is adorned with a stunning array of wildflowers that add a burst of color to the landscape. As the trek winds through lush meadows, trekkers are greeted by a dazzling tapestry of vibrant blooms. Throughout the trek, the crystal-clear waters of the Lidder River or  its tributaries , which flows through the valley, provide a constant companion. The river, with its glistening, turquoise waters and rhythmic sound, adds an enchanting element to the trek. The views of the river as it winds through the valley are nothing short of spectacular, its beauty only enhancing the trek’s already incredible vistas.

Typically completed within an eight-day timeframe, the Tarsar Marsar trek includes a day of acclimatization in Aru Valley. Spanning a total distance of 47.8 kilometers, this trek requires six days of immersive trekking through the diverse and enchanting landscapes of Kashmir. It stands as a quintessential representation of the region’s sublime natural beauty, offering trekkers a harmonious blend of nature, culture, and adventure. With its gentle terrain and scenic grandeur, it is an ideal trek for beginners.

Pack:
–Backpack 40–50 Lt with rain cover – Goes on the horse/porter
– Day Pack 15–20 lt with rain cover- to carry your camera, water bottle, trail layers, trail food etc.
Footwear:
-Trekking Shoes: Please do not wear sports shoes as on most treks, as we go higher it gets harder to use sports shoes.
Socks:
– 2 -3 pairs of trekking socks.
– 2 pairs of woolen socks – ideal to sleep in and best to use when in camp. We do not recommend them while trekking
Clothing:
– Pants: 3 pairs (including the ones you wear) – Ideal are the quick dry trekking pants. Alternatively, track pants are also comfortable to trek in.
– T-shirts 3 pairs (including the ones you are wearing) – Preferably quick dry, full sleeve t-shirts You can also choose to get T-shirts with collars, they offer extra protection for the neck from sunburns.
– Fleece Jacket
– Rain & Wind Protection
– Down filled / Hollow fiber fill insulated Jacket
– Thermal liners – 1 pair upper and lower (optional).
Accessories:
– Warm Cap
– Gloves
– Sun Cap
– Sunglasses with UV protection.
Other recommended necessities:
– Toiletries – sunscreen SPF 40+, moisturiser, lip balm, soap, toilet paper.
– Repair Kit (needle and thread).
– Headlamp/ Torch.
– Camera.
– Water Bottle- Ideally keep two bottles 1 liter each.
– Trekking Pole – Optional.
– Plastic Packing covers.(Please pack all your gear in waterproof plastic bags so that your clothes etc do not get wet while on horses or porters. Also, carry extra plastic bags in case you need to pack wet clothes.)
